How do they breed?

Male Malawi trout are territorial and will establish a breeding site on the substrate of the tank. The female will then lay her eggs on a flat rock or another surface in the male’s territory. After fertilizing the eggs, both parents protect them until they hatch. Once hatched, fry can be found near their parents for protection from predators. As they grow, the fry can be moved to a separate tank to prevent aggression from larger fish. With the right conditions, these fish are easy to breed in an aquarium and can make for an interesting addition to any freshwater setup.
